Quollioに入る前は、どんなキャリアを歩んで来られましたか？

最初はスタートアップでアプリ開発をしていて、そういった環境がすごく自分に合っていると感じていました。自由な雰囲気の中で、プロダクトにしっかり関われるところが魅力で、ずっとスタートアップで働くことに惹かれていました。最近では、フルスタックやバックエンドエンジニアとして働いていました。

Quollioに入ろうと思ったきっかけや、特に魅力に感じたポイントはありますか？

データに関する仕事にはもともと興味があって、Quollioのプロダクトはまさに自分の興味とマッチしていました。難しい課題を解決することも好きなので、そこにもワクワクしましたね。あとは、創業メンバーと話す中で、彼らの熱意やビジョンにすごく共感できて、「ここで働きたい」と思ったのが決め手です。

現在取り組んでいるプロジェクトやプロダクトについて教えてください。

今取り組んでいるプロジェクトのひとつは、バックエンドシステムのスケーラビリティ向上です。よりデータ量の多いお客様にも対応できるようにするため、将来的なニーズを見据えてサービスの拡張性を高める必要があります。大変な部分もありますが、その分やりがいもあって楽しいです。

技術選定や開発の際に意識していることはありますか？

私たちはスピード感のある開発が求められる若いスタートアップなので、素早く開発できるツールや技術を積極的に採り入れています。加えて、プロダクトの方向性やお客様のニーズ、とくにスケーラビリティやパフォーマンスとのバランスも大事にしています。

エンジニアリングマネージャーとして一番大変なことは何ですか？

技術的負債のマネジメントが常に課題ですね。プロダクトが成長するにつれて、お客様からの新機能のリクエストも増えてきますが、同時に技術的負債にも向き合っていかないといけません。この両立のバランスを取ること、そして負債解消のための時間をどう確保するかが難しいところです。

Quollioのプロダクトやサービスについて、どう感じていますか？

私にとって一番大事なことは、そのプロダクトの目的やビジョンを信じられるかどうかです。データに関するニーズがどんどん高まる中で、私たちのプロダクトはその解決策として確かな存在感を発揮していると感じています。大手企業に実際にご利用いただいているのを見ると、「自分たちが作っているものには本当に価値があるんだ」と実感できて、すごくワクワクします！

今後、Quollioのプロダクトやサービスにどんなことを期待していますか？

個人的には、より便利で使いやすくなるように、高度な分析機能やインテリジェントなラベリングツールを組み込んだワークフロー自動化の強化を期待しています。これらによって手作業を減らしながらも、精度や一貫性を保つことができると思っています。

Quollioのプロダクトで、面白いと感じる点や逆に難しさを感じる点は何ですか？

プロダクトが常に成長し続けていて、お客様のニーズに合わせて進化していくところが面白いですね。その反面、ときには作ったものをやり直したり、方向転換したりすることもあります。正直、大変だなと感じることもありますが、「もっといいものを作ろう」という気持ちが原動力になっています。

Quollioでエンジニアとして働くということには、どんな意味があると考えていますか？

まだ小さなチームですが、複雑なプロダクトを扱っている分、個々のメンバーがしっかりと技術スタックを理解し、自分の仕事に責任を持って取り組む必要があります。疑問に思ったことをちゃんと質問する姿勢も大事ですし、そういった姿勢があってこそ、この変化の多い環境で力を発揮できると思っています。

開発チームの雰囲気や文化はどのような感じですか？

協力的でサポートし合う文化があると思います。各メンバーが自律的に開発を進めつつも、知識を共有したり、難しい問題を一緒に解決したりと、チーム全体で助け合う雰囲気がありますね。 基本的にリモートで働いていて、Slackでのコミュニケーションが中心ですが、オフィスに出社した際は、より密なコミュニケーションの場として活用しています。

ご自身のワーキングスタイルを教えてください。

柔軟で好奇心旺盛なタイプだと思います。何か起きたときにすぐリアクションするというよりは、いろんな選択肢をじっくり考えたり、チームの意見を丁寧に聞いたりするようにしています。

普段の1日や1週間は、どんな感じで過ごしていますか？

週の中では、チームメンバーとの1on1ミーティングや、プロダクションのバグ調査、開発サイクルの準備やリリース計画などを行っています。今でも手を動かすことが好きなので、可能な範囲で開発タスクにも取り組んでいます。

多国籍チームで働くうえで、大事にしていることは何ですか？ 

多国籍のエンジニアチームには、さまざまな視点やバックグラウンド、考え方が集まっているので、それが技術的な課題を解決するうえで大きな強みになっています。文化的な違いがあるからこそ、ユニークなアプローチや創造的な解決策が生まれることも多く、とても価値があると感じています。

最近ハマっていることはありますか？

ワークライフバランスはとても大事にしていて、平日でもできるだけ体を動かすようにしています。家庭菜園で野菜を育てたり、ハイキングに行ったり、子どもたちと一緒に公園を走り回ったりするのが好きですね！

今後チャレンジしてみたい技術分野はありますか？

AIの時代になって、開発者の生産性を高めるツールやプラットフォームが次々と出てきていますよね。こういった技術の進化についていくことがとても重要だと思っています。Quollioが競争力を保つためにも、これらの新しい技術をキャッチアップして、開発スタックにうまく取り入れていければいいなと思っています

求めているスキルや姿勢について教えてください！

技術力があることはもちろん大切ですが、それ以上に、自分で考えて問題を解決できる力、深くて本質的な質問ができる力、そしてチームとしっかり連携できるコミュニケーション力を大事にしています。スタートアップなので、スピード感を持って動ける人が向いていますね！

Why did John—an engineer with a solid background in startups—choose to join Quollio?

What kind of career path did you have before joining Quollio?

I began my career developing applications at startups. I’ve always been drawn to the flexible culture of startups and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on products. Most recently, I worked as a full-stack and backend engineer.

What made you decide to join Quollio, and what aspects did you find particularly appealing?

My interest in data aligns perfectly with Quollio’s product. I was excited by the opportunity to solve complex problems. After meeting the founders and seeing their enthusiasm and commitment to the company's success, I knew this was the right place for me.

Could you tell us about the projects or products you are currently working on?

One of the projects we’re focused on is improving the scalability of our backend systems. As we onboard customers with increasingly large and complex datasets, we need to ensure our systems are robust and future-ready. It's a challenging but rewarding task.

What do you keep in mind when making technology choices and during the development process?

As a young startup, speed matters. We choose tools and technologies that support rapid development, but always with an eye on scalability, product direction, and customer needs.

What is the biggest challenge as an Engineering Manager?

Managing technical debt is an ongoing challenge. As we grow and add features, it's critical to balance new development with efforts to refactor and improve existing systems. Scheduling time for this is always a puzzle.

How do you feel about Quollio’s products and services?

I strongly believe in the purpose and vision behind our product. As data demands increase, our product is emerging as a leading solution. Seeing major enterprise companies use our product validates the impact of what we’re building.

What kind of future developments do you expect or hope for in our products and services?

I’m excited about integrating advanced analytics and intelligent labeling tools to improve workflow automation. These features will reduce manual work while maintaining accuracy and consistency in data handling.

What do you find interesting and challenging about the product?

The product evolves constantly to meet user needs. Sometimes we need to pivot, reassess, or even discard completed work. While this can be tough, it keeps us focused on creating the best possible solution.

What does being an engineer at Quollio mean to you?

Being an engineer here means working with a complex and dynamic product in a small, fast-moving team. It requires ownership, curiosity, and the confidence to ask the right questions and dive deep into our tech stack.

How would you describe the atmosphere and culture of the team at Quollio?

Our engineering team is collaborative and supportive. While we each take ownership of our work, we’re constantly sharing knowledge and helping one another. Though we work remotely, we maintain close communication through Slack and occasionally meet at our Tokyo office.

What is your working style like?

I’d say it’s flexible and curious. I prefer to take time to explore options rather than rushing decisions, and I value hearing my teammates' perspectives before moving forward.

What does a typical day or week look like for you?

My week includes one-on-ones with teammates, investigating production issues, preparing for our development cycles, and planning releases. I still enjoy hands-on coding and take development tasks whenever I can.

What do you value most when working with a multinational team as an Engineering Manager?

Diverse backgrounds bring fresh perspectives. Cultural differences often lead to unique problem-solving approaches, which is incredibly valuable when tackling complex technical challenges.

Are there any technologies or hobbies you’re enjoying these days?

Work-life balance is important to me. I stay active during the week, and I enjoy gardening, hiking, and running around the park with my kids.

What technical areas do you want to challenge yourself with in the future?

With the rapid evolution of AI, I want to stay up-to-date on tools that enhance developer productivity. Incorporating these into our stack will be key to staying competitive.

Could you tell us about the skills and attitudes you especially look for?

Strong technical skills are a must, but just as important are curiosity, independent problem-solving, and collaboration. In a startup, we need people who can move fast and think smart.
